Reviews

...I would not have dared dream of the profound personal and professional impact it would have on so many teachers and through them, on countless young black lives in South Africa.

Basil Moore
formerly Professor of Education
University of South Australia

...the combination of keys which opened the door of possibility for otherwise disheartened teachers has been an awesome and humbling experience. ...This book is a testament to the way these primary teachers have risen to the occasion and met the challenge.

Alan Kenyon
Academic Coordinator
Distance Education Project
University of Fort Hare

Words from the Nelson Mandela Foundation

This fine book, which tells the stories of eight of our South African teachers in their university study and practical teaching in local schools, is most welcome in these times of opportunity and challenge.

The teachers are graduates of the collaborative teacher education and professional development program based at the University of Fort Hare and developed with the support of the University of South Australia over the last decade.

The stories and colour photographs show clearly how these women from South Africa have taken on, and grown into the teaching profession, caring for the local children and the communities with which they work. It shows them trying out different ways to work in classrooms that seek to respect and enhance the freedoms and hopes of the children, and to challenge them to learn new knowledge and develop new skills.

This book is a great celebration of the educational work of local teachers who have upgraded their teaching qualifications at the University of Fort Hare and are now applying their new knowledge and skills in schools in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.

These pictures and stories of our teachers and their pupils in action are stories of hope, courage and achievement.
